About United States
It is a federal republic of 50 states and a federal capital district, Washington, D.C., which is its capital. The 48 contiguous states border Canada to the north and Mexico to the south, with Alaska in the northwest and the Hawaiian archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. It also asserts sovereignty over five major island territories and various uninhabited islands in Oceania and the Caribbean. It is a constitutional republic whose legislature is the United States Congress, its currency is the United States dollar and its central bank is the Federal Reserve System. Paleo-Indians migrated from North Asia to North America at least 15,000 years ago. It is a member of the United Nations Security Council, NATO and the G7. Its population was 340,110,988 as of July 1, 2024.
