If you’re anything like us, you might have seen a few people about – mostly on social networks – sporting drawings and tattoos of an usual punctuation mark on their body… Usually found on the inside of the wrist, these little semi colons actually have a rather deep and powerful message. Just ask the founder of ‘The Semi-Colon Project, Wisconsin’s Amy Bluel…
Amy’s life has been severely affected by mental health issues. Her father committed suicide and it impacted her and her family deeply. But Amy refused to become a victim and decided to do something to fight back and raise awareness of mental health issues. So she came up with the semi-colon idea.
The symbols represent the difficulties and troubles that many people go through and seeks to connect them and make them feel like they’re not alone. And the project has really kicked off. We think this is great work from Amy and everyone who’s got involved!
But why a semi-colon? Good question. The website behind the movement explains it like this:
“A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”
So now you know!
