Numerous news stories have emerged in recent years surrounding abuse of elderly or otherwise vulnerable people in hospices across the world. Hundreds of former carers have been imprisoned for both psychological and physical abuse, ranging from verbal insults to outright assault and murder. How someone could act in such a way to obviously helpless people is beyond my comprehension.
When this video begins, you’d be forgiven for assuming that this was going to be another case of carer abuse. But you’d be wrong, all the same. In the video, we see Joshua Woodard, a hospice carer at Austinburg Nursing & Rehab Center in Austinburg, Ohio. Joshua is serenading an elderly lady called Mary with a moving version of of the classic hymn, “How Great Thou Art.” You can see that Joshua’s beautiful rendition is providing great comfort to Mary, as she approaches the end of her life.
You are a credit to your profession, Joshua. I salute you.
