We’ve all been there, haven’t we? You’re eating out and the food’s taking an age to come out. You speak to your server and she tells you that the kitchen’s real busy. Your food finally arrives, but it’s been the best part of an hour. It’s frustrating, but it happens.
As it happened with some of waitress Jess Jones’ customers recently. The 20 year-old college student, who attends Rutgers University, was waiting tables on a shift this week at D’Jais Bar & Grill in Belmar, New Jersey. The place got busy and the wait for food increased. One party became disgruntled and had to wait an hour.
When the food came and the check followed, Jones noticed this message…
After receiving the ‘tip’, Jones took to Facebook to post the picture of the check and vent her frustration. Her post quickly went viral. She said:
“Last night, I was stunned by this receipt that was left for me by a party of eight people. I would have preferred a ‘$0’ tip than a ‘LOL’ tip, but as a waitress, bad tips and harsh notes are all part of the job. Even though they did wait an hour to eat, they remained satisfied with filled drinks and proper notice that the kitchen was a bit busier than normal. I’ve worked in the service industry for five years and I take pride in providing great service to my customers.”
“Most of my paychecks are less than pocket change because I have to pay taxes on the tips I make. I need tips to pay my bills. All waiters do. We spend an hour or more of our time befriending you, making you laugh, getting to know you, and making your dining experience the best it can be. We work hard, and we really do care.”
We feel for the diners and see their point of view, but c’mon – surely this is a little harsh on the server. After all, it wasn’t her fault that the kitchen was backed up… Still, it was pretty funny!
